I'm posting about an issue I bet I'm not the only one afflicted with. My wife and I have a place on Tybee, but spend most of our time 800+ miles away. Due to health and other matters, we've not been able to be at Tybee for months. We had our mail forwarded, but it expired, so we desired to have a local friend (who is a government employee and well known to post office personnel) pick up our mail for us. Unfortunately, the post office won't allow this, even though the personnel know us and the government employee we desire to have pick up the mail. They said we'd need to give him a key to the PO Box, but they won't do an extra one for him 'cause we're not there in person to sign for it.We find these policies overly rigid and unhelpful. We urge the powers-that-be to put a procedure in place to accommodate situations such as this. With a $2B loss last quarter, we'd think the postal service would be doing what it can to provide customers/taxpayers with the services they most desire.

I would think you could execute a notorized letter authorizing and enclosing payment for a key. A friend of mine had a post office box and went into a nursing home. There was a mobile notary who came to the nursing home and notarized a letter giving me the box to put my name on. I still fwd pieces of mail to him but the box is in my name now and, of course, I have taken over paying the box fee. I think there is a new postmaster so if this wasn't possible before it might be now. Good luck.
