After having trouble getting to the post office for a week because of a myriad of circumstances, I finally made it to the Cortaro post office at 4:33, three minutes after the published closing time. As I walked into the lobby the postal employee was helping the only other customer in there and immediately announced he was closed. An older gentleman was walking in after me. I said I just needed to mail a few envelopes and he said the truck leaves at 4:30, “we have to get the mail out“. I asked if he could mail these for me since I was only three minutes late and he said “I’m sorry“. What kind of terrible human being would not help someone out in those circumstances a mere three minutes after the public closing time with the cash registers open and actively doing business. It doesn’t matter who you are and who you work for whether it’s state private or federal, common decency dictates that you would help out another person three minutes past the published closing time. This is an example of the type of government employee that causes the general public to have a bad opinion of “government employees “. I suspect he couldn’t work any other place except a government agency that tolerates this kind of terrible customer service. Mailing my envelopes for me would have probably delayed his departure in entire 90 seconds.
